Heavy pours and delicious food. Fast service even when busy. Our server Jamie was wonderful. Thank you guys!
Well folks, what can I say? I bring my guests from the bay area to show off this Taqueria simply amazing wholesome fresh! And everything on the menu is delicious, now if you're out the night before and you want to sneak over there and have some breakfast like I have it's just as good except for no margarita in the morning more like bloody Mary all I can say folks is this place should be called Yum Yum!
Best Mexican restaurant around, hands down. The family who owns the business is from Jalisco so they know their stuff and are fantastic people to boot. The food is phenomenal, as is the service. Enjoy the dining room or head straight to the bar and get a great education on tequila from the owner Jaime. They also do catering and have great prices considering the portion sizes they offer. Don't miss the gigantic wet burrito, or my personal favorite the El Jefe Platter. And if you start frequenting the establishment you'll start getting to know many of the regulars. Doesn't get much better than El Agave if you're looking for great food and great company.
Over the last decade or so, El Agave Taqueria, located in Auburn, CA has achieved quite a reputation among Auburn locals, visitors, and those who appreciate delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine, from a varied menu. You'll enjoy the cuisine of Mexico that you've come to love and enjoy, served by friendly staff, in a very comfortable dining room. Weather permitting... the patio is fantastic, and the restaurant offers a compact, full-service bar. The dining room is clean, spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated. Furniture is all booths, which makes for comfortable dining. I noted it was difficult for photography, as the dining room is divided into several sections, all separated by high partitions. I found the decor to be very appealing and attractive. The restaurant offers a small, full-service bar that mixes all of your favorite Mexican cocktails, and anything you can think of. The bar has a separate menu from the restaurant, but it's all on the same tab. My lunch began with a complimentary bowl of chips and salsa, brought to me by my friendly hostess, Wendy. The corn tortilla chips were freshly made in-house and were actually still a little warm. They had just the right amount of salt for flavor, and were firm and crisp. The salsa was tomato based, about medium in texture, with a rich flavor, and a just enough "kick" to make for great dipping, but not enough to offend sensitive taste buds. Such a great way to begin a wonderful lunch! From the menu posted at the bar, I splurged today and ordered a "Large Michelada," with everything. My beer of choice was Modelo Negro, as I prefer a darker, more robust beer when I order a michelada. Isn't the presentation beautiful? Every michelada is different, and each restaurant uses their own recipe, so I really don't know all the ingredients in this amazing cocktail. What I DO know is that it arrived in a HUGE, frosted mug, topped with a bottle of Modelo Negro Mexican beer, which was held into place using a special tool, drizzled with hot sauce, which made for a dramatic presentation. The beer emptied into spicy tomato juice, and you sipped this fine cocktail using a straw. Garnishes included shrimp, cucumber, lime and orange, all sprinkled with chili powder. Muy sabroso! Was this feast my appetizer, main course or dessert? Who knows... as between the michelada and the complimentary chips and salsa, this made for a meal, thanks to the tomato juice, shrimp, cucumber, lime and orange slices. My order of three tacos made for a hearty dessert... From the "Lunch Specials" on the first page of the menu, I went with "Authentic Tacos (3)," which truly lived up to their name. My choice of protein was carnitas, but chicken and carne asada are offered if that's what you prefer. Surprise! ... my three tacos included a generous helping of fresh guacamole, which really went well with the tacos. These tacos were Mexican "Street Tacos," which is so-named, as you'll find street vendors in every Mexican city, town or village, selling these delicious, small tacos. Each of my tacos began with two slightly toasted DVD-size corn tortillas, which add robust flavor and hold the taco together so it doesn't spill the goodies. My meat of choice was carnitas - marinated, roasted and shredded pork - and the carnitas were juicy, tender and very flavorful. Fresh pico de gallo topped the carnitas, which was diced Roma tomato, white onion with a sprinkling of chopped cilantro. The salsa was very mild, but had just enough "spice" to give it a robust, earthy flavor. The plate of tacos came with sliced radish, a couple slices of lime and large spoonful of fresh guacamole, which made for a welcome addition to this delicious lunch. The guacamole wasn't listed on the menu, and made for a welcome surprise. I squeezed lime juice on my tacos, for an added taco "kick," as per the custom in Mexico.
This was our second visit and it was equally good as the first visit. Our group of 7 showed up around noon and came in individually. We were greeted and seated as we arrived. Our beer orders were taken and after the beer was delivered our food orders were taken. The beer was delivered in large cold glass mugs. Our server remembered us from last time and welcomed us back. We ordered across the menu and all food was excellent. I had a shrimp quesadilla that was excellent. Parking is adjacent and easy. There is also a small inviting bar area that is available. In all a good experience and we will return.
This is our favorite to go Mexican place! We have excellent service, delicious food and yummy drinks. We like to sit outside with our dogs . Be sure to order flour chips!
What a little gem to find in Auburn. Well worth the trip off the freeway for some authentic Mexican food. The staff was welcoming and the service was fast, and if felt like a typical Mexican restaurant (in a good way). We sat down, and were offered chips and guac and salsa. They were so fresh and delicious that we kept munching on them. I ordered the steak tacos and my daughter ordered a wet burrito. Both were excellent. The steak tacos were almost overfilled with scrumptious meat and seasoned perfectly. My daughter's burrito was also delicious and absolutely massive. I was impressed with the amount of food and the pricing. You felt like you got more than your money's worth, which always feels like a win. There were so many other options that I wanted to try, that I will insist on a repeat visit the next time we are traveling down highway 80.
First impression was wow, what a genuinely well decorated and inviting ambiance. The place is quite beautiful and the staff was very welcoming and helpful. They have a really rich menu in Mexican fare except for what I wanted which was more fish options. I went with the fried fish tacos and was somewhat disappointed. It lacked any bold flavors and left me wanting more spice and seasoning. Couldn't complain about the serving size as it did satisfy my appetite, just not my taste buds. My wife and daughter nailed their orders as they were more than satisfied. I was a bit shocked by the actual size of my daughter's burrito. WHOLLY MOLLY!!! It could easily serve 3 people. The flavor was spot on. My wife's steak tacos were really good as well. The margaritas were really good as well. Would certainly think about coming back.
Found this gem on the drive back from Truckee/Tahoe area. If you're unfamiliar with the drive, be sure to stop by Auburn for any meals/snacks before hitting that long stretch to Tahoe. Honestly, for how well my family and I enjoyed this spot, it deserves more reviews! The agave was delicious. The customer service from the gentleman at the host stand and our server were so attentive and friendly. If you like Mexican beer, get a Michelada! I would go back just for that alone - I had the negra modelo, but they have a variety of beers to choose from. All of the dishes we ordered at the table were yummy. The burrito bowl stood out to me, along with the crispy chicken tacos. I really liked the way the chicken was prepared, it was grilled and charred. Also, the rice and beans are DELICIOUS! From now on, we will be sure to make this a stop when heading to Reno/Tahoe.
